Crafts and Workplaces

My interior paintings are often related to crafts, and depict workplaces or shops where craftsmen have learned skills to produce and sell handicrafts such as baskets, quilts, boats, and gourmet food.

These places fascinate me because they demonstrate the essence of creativity, hard work, and American skills.

I visited the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, RI, and saw students working on my favorite wooden boat, the beetle cat.  This scene is from the balcony, where visitors can overlook the activity of all stages of the boat restoration procedure.  In the yard, you can see some of the sad old beetle cats that will be the fodder for the next schedule of classes.  My goal was to relate the busy activity in the pleasantly-lit workshop, using many glazed layers and some texture tricks.
