Taking Shelter

This painting with the doves is one of those paintings where I gave myself a technique challenge, then chose the subject.  The photo of doves which I took in Hawaii years ago seemed to match the exercise.  The idea was to use three colors, and to use negative painting to define the knotted trunks and vines, then to lift (basically blot) out the dove shapes so they would have soft edges, yet pop out as focal points.  I started by wetting the paper and dripping the three colors strategically down the paper.  Then I drew the tree trunks and used the drip marks as places that would be vines, using darker paint outside those trunks and drip marks to define them.
