To play off a line in a poem by Joyce Kilmer, “I think that I shall never see…a painting lovely as a tree.” In my travels to all parts of this country, I began to focus on and sketch tree shapes regularly. Eventually, I came to realize that the presence of certain trees define a region’s identity.
